As many students, including myself, approach the transition into the workforce, we're faced with the reality of remote work, which can be challenging for many. How do you separate work from home life, stay on top of deadlines, and resist the temptation of binge-watching your favorite shows while sprawled on the couch? Here are some tips and tricks I've learned this semester in my class at 1910 PR about working effectively in a remote PR firm.
Fortunately, we live in an age where technology can ease the challenges of remote work. Implementing messaging apps like Slack and GroupMe can be incredibly beneficial. These platforms keep you connected with your team, allowing for instant communication of urgent messages. Plus, having shared drives integrated into these apps makes it quick and easy to locate necessary files. Learning to navigate these tools as soon as your team connects is crucial to ensure you stay updated and don't miss important information.
Working in a firm without daily face-to-face interactions can be tough, so virtual meetings are essential. Zoom meetings, for instance, help our team outline deadlines, assign tasks, check in on project status, and clarify any questions regarding our weekly assignments. These gatherings not only facilitate project progress but also foster team bonding and improve communication, making them indispensable.
Deadlines are a constant in life, and they hold significant importance in the workplace. It’s easy to lose track of them when working from home without the structure of an office environment. Keeping your deadlines visible is essential. This can be done by maintaining a personal calendar, using online calendar tools, or sharing a content calendar with your team to ensure all tasks are on track.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, be adaptable. You might find yourself needing to assist with someone else's project when theirs falls through or juggle multiple assignments during particularly busy weeks. While these situations can be challenging, communication is key, and it's crucial to support your team. By utilizing the tools mentioned above, you can be more adaptable and become a reliable team member that others enjoy working with.
